Dental Face Shield on a mannequin

Dental face shields are PPE - personal protection equipment. They come in 3 different types; Regular dental face shields, short loupe models and long loupe models. Masks protect the patients from you; face shields protect the dentist or hygenist from the patients.

Dental face shields are produced using 3D printing, CNC cutting machines, foam cutters and other specialized modern equipment. Dental face shields can be worn by all of the dental office staff and hygienists.

Historically face shields were worn in the ICU and infectious units of the hospital. They protect against infectious or hazerdous splash, splatter or sprays. Now they are effective to shield from cough, sneezes and even speaking with infectious COVID-19 people. These airborne viruses will go right through cloth or surgical masks. A 2014 cough simulation study by Willima G. Lindsley showed a face shield reduced inhalation exposure by the worker by 96% at 18 inches apart. Much like the plexy glass being installed for grocery check out lanes, face shields provide individuals this protection.

WhiteClouds offers 3 dental face shields that help project all of the employees in a dentistry business:

  1. The dental face shields are meant to be used for hygienists and office personal
  2. The dental short loupes face shields are to be used in conjunction with shorter loupes - 2" or shorter loupes
  3. The dental long loupes face shields are to be used in conjunction with longer loupes - longer than 2". The long loupes face shields have an extended frame that provides 4" of clearance from the tip of the nose to the clear face shield. It also comes as a kit with 10 removable transparent face shields.

The question is often asked: What is better – a face shield or a face mask? A recent article in JAMA came out in favor of medical face shields compared to surgical or home-made cloth masks. Here is why we find face shields better:

  1. Face Shields are more comfortable
  2. With the wrap-around advantage, face shields protect the entire face
  3. Face Shields don't heat up the face, whereas wearing masks do
  4. Glasses fit comfortably under the dental face shield
  5. Face shields, even disposable face shields, are easy to clean and disinfect
  6. Inexpensive and easy to buy
  7. Face shields naturally remind the wearer not to touch face
  8. Instant Shielding form unexpected break in physical distancing
  9. Being able to see through face shields enables lip reading for deaf and hard-of-hearing communication
  10. Glasses don't slide down or fly off like they do with the face masks (caused from humidity that loosens the hold on the glasses around the nose)
  11. Face Shields offer you the opportunity to eat while wearing a face shield – just be careful.
